Delicate Arch is the most famous freestanding natural sandstone arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. For me, it’s one of those “postcard” locations. It’s already been explored and photographed so much that I don’t approach photographing it the same way I may approach a less famous location.

Download the Video Tutorial to see exactly how I shot and edited this image of Delicate Arch.

The Field Pouch Review – New mini bag from Peak Design

December 4, 2015 by mitchrichie 4 Comments

Peak Design Pouch

The thing I love about products from Peak Design is that they all work together. By far, my favorite Peak Design product is their Slide camera strap. It’s incredibly comfortable, well built, and so easy to adjust you find yourself adjusting it just for fun. I was excited to see the same strap technology employed in their new bag endorsed by Trey Ratcliff: The Everyday Messenger Bag.

But this review isn’t about that bag. This review is about the little brother to The Everyday Messenger, a fun little accessories bag called The Field Pouch. [Read more…]

The 7 Variables of Flash Photography

November 9, 2015 by mitchrichie Leave a Comment

off-camera flash

Are you new to flash photography? Here are two tutorial videos that introduce the basic equipment and how it works: Download Tutorial Videos

While teaching photography in the classroom and online to thousands of students, I’ve come to learn that most new photographer’s insecurity is caused by a perceived lack of control to produce images that are consistent with their desired results. We fear what we do not understand, and photography is no different. Just when you master the basics, more advanced techniques become within reach which can greatly improve your work, if you take the time to learn and understand. [Read more…]

Holga Lo-Fi gets a Digital Upgrade

September 3, 2015 by mitchrichie Leave a Comment

Holga Digital

In this age of high megapixel counts and digital perfection, the desire for a more organic, natural, and humanistic feel in photography is growing. Instagram is the most obvious example of this, giving users the ability to degrade their cell phone images using filters designed to look vintage or nostalgic.

The popularity, even today, of the Holga lo-fi film camera is another example of this. This iconic toy camera, originally brought to life in 1981, is an ultra-basic film camera with a plastic lens that produces richly textured, unpredictable images with a soft focus and occasional light streaks.
