The SMDV DIFF 60 Speedbox Diffuser is a 23″ quick folding portable hexagonal softbox for speedlight flashes. There is a 19″ and 15″ version as well. The unit has three main parts that come packed in the included bag. There is the rip stop style nylon softbox itself, with plastic rods that act like tent poles to keep the softbox extended. The softbox locks into a plastic speed ring that attaches to the speedlight and lightstand mount.
Here’s a short video showing how it goes together:
The included carry bag is quite nice. Usually when you get a bag with something it’s very low quality and the item is impossible to get back into the bag once you pull it out the first time. This bag is high quality with two handles and a shoulder strap. It’s large enough to easily contain all of the softbox parts as well as two speedlights, umbrellas, spare batteries and more. A travel light stand doesn’t quite fit, but I just stack it on top between the handles and it’s good to go.
The softbox itself is just big enough to really provide a nice quality of soft light yet small and light enough to be really easy to travel or hike with. The softbox collapses instantly when you press the release tabs on the speed ring and the whole thing breaks down and packs up in seconds. When I first got this unit, I was a little worried about the plastic speed ring and mount thinking that it might break easily when tossed around in a checked bag. I’ve flown with it twice now and checked it both times with no issues. It seems to be durable and should last for a long time unless you really beat on it. I’m really pleased with this unit so far and will add it to my recommended flash gear page.
