On first look, the 7′ Flashpoint AutoStand from Adorama seems like any other light support that I’ve used. My stands tend to get abused, thrown in a the car or in a pelican case and toted around to each shoot as a necessary annoyance. I say annoyance because there is nothing fun about setting up light stands. It’s a tedious and time consuming task to loosen each knob and extend the legs, attach a light, and then reposition where needed.
The AutoStand aims to ease your pain and save you time. As the name implies, the AutoStand automatically extends it’s three legs when you place it down on the floor. As you lift the stand, the legs automatically fold back up. This is a due to a clever mechanical design that truly makes it fun to set this stand up.
It’s really better to see it in action so here’s a video showing how the Flashpoint AutoStand works:
The Flashpoint AutoStand comes in two versions, 7′ and 9′ and costs $59.95 and $79.95 respectively. The 7′ version folds down to 30 inches for storage and while set up adjusts from about 3′ to a maximum 7′. Both versions come with a reversible attachment stud. I was glad to see both 1/4″-20 thread on one end and a 3/8″ thread on the other. The stud can be mounted in either vertical or horizontal orientation, which is more than can be said for other stands I’ve purchased for more money.
The Flashpoint AutoStand is one of those innovations that makes you wonder why nobody came up with a solution like this before. After using it, it’s hard to imagine wanting to use any other light stand.
